They are complaining about a court decision that ruled that a 'moment of silence' rule in a public school was a veiled attempt to introduce sectarian religious belief into the classroom.

I think I got through maybe a minute of this, and no more. Seriously, giving a weasel like Glenn Hack and a hateful douche like Jim "Show Your Son Your Cock So He Won't Be Gay" Dobson time on TV together is a recipe for a sudden spike in aspirin sales. And this whole thing, if you don't care to watch it (and I wouldn't blame you) is chock full of the same bullshit people like these love to push: "forcing atheism down our throats", "the Constitution says we can", "they wanna take God out of our country", "Christian nation", "they're sayin' kids can't pray", the whole bit.

The plain truth of it is, if you actually follow the link provided after the video in PZ's post, you find that the ruling states and re-states that this has been determind, time and time again, to be nothing more than an attempt to establish religion as a part of daily school life. As much as they try to weasel out of it, this isn't about "reflection" or "silence", it's about trying to make everyone's kids pray to whatever Magic Sky-Man the teacher follows.

Ah well, at least Bonehead Beck, the deranged, hateful, lying scumbag, is on the "news" channel most in line with his spewings.

Update: Fox News has announced that Glenn Beck will host the 5PM hour, beginning next spring. Beck signed a multi-year agreement to host a weekday program at 5PM as well as a weekend show on the network.

Well, color me unsurprised. I figured it was only a matter of time before Hack realized he's basically a third-rate Jesus-Boy Hannity clone and went to rejoin the slime he dripped from. Now maybe they can get something intelligent to replace Hack's screefest of a show - like a test pattern.

Get rid of Nancy the Murderess and you've got a nice, solid, four-hour block you can actually do something with. Maybe they could put the same half-hour of news they repeat for most of the day in there, like they used to have. It'd certainly be more informative. OR maybe they could get some real journalism in there. Oh, no, wait, this is a cable news network. They don't have any of that to spare, and Anderson Cooper has his own show.

Good riddance, Glenn Hack. Go back to the Propaganda Channel, and take that fat-headed racist and xenophobe Lou Dobbs with you. He'd fit in well there, too, except for his talk about the middle class.

Beck: Wal-Mart Made A ‘Deal With Terrorists’ In Ending Its Lawsuit Against Brain-Damaged Employee

In 2000, then-Wal-Mart employee Debbie Shank was hit by a semi-truck, leaving her seriously brain-damaged and confined to a wheelchair. Wal-Mart covered her medical expenses until she won a settlement from the trucking company that left her $417,000 after legal fees.

Invoking a little-noticed clause in Shank’s contract that kicked in once she won a settlement with the trucking company, Wal-Mart sued the Shank family to recoup the medical expenses it had spent on her care, all $470,000.

In response, MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann last week began decrying Wal-Mart’s actions nightly, four times labeling $9-billion corporation one of his “Worst Persons in the World.” Last night, however, Olbermann was able to announce the good news — that Wal Mart yesterday wrote to the Shanks to tell them it would drop its suit:

Occasionally others help us step back and look at a situation in a different way. This is one of those times. … Wal-Mart will not seek any reimbursement for the money already spent on Ms. Shank’s care, and we will work with you to ensure the remaining amounts in the trust can be used for her ongoing care.

Unfortunately, CNN’s Glenn Beck could not attain a similarly enlightened perspective. He condemned Wal-Mart on his radio show today, insisting the corporation had made a “deal with terrorists” and had succumbed to “blackmail”:

Well, what are the principles? The principles are right is right, wrong is wrong. No matter how much I need it, no matter how hard it is for me, no matter how much it sucks, it’s not right. My word is my bond. I made an agreement. I didn’t see it in there. … This is blackmail. And yet Wal-Mart folds. You don’t deal with terrorists? Really? You just did. You just dealt with economic blackmailers. … But then — and I don’t even put it on the family as much as I do on the media. The media, they just — MSNBC, man, they can just make hay with this.

I just love how this insane, gibbering asshole is given a forum to hate and demean other human beings every goddamn day without so much as a second thought as to the kind of slanderous bullshit he says. For anyone wondering, yes you can see Glenn Beck every day on CNN's Headline News and hear him every day on AM 1190 WOWO, Ft. Wayne home for deranged far-right horseshit. Wait a second, why am I saying this? Craig already said it.

Glenn Beck: Idiot or Dumbass?

At work, the TV in the lobby is always turned to Headline News. Now, that wouldn't be so bad if Headline News, like its parent channel CNN, weren't trying to copy the Fox News "offend-and-annoy" model. A good example of how bad this change in HN's lineup is is reflected in the main reasons I'm making this post: Nancy Grace and Glenn Beck.

First off, Glenn Beck. If you've been reading Media Matters for America, then you know how bad this guy is: he's a gibbering moron tryong to follow the "shout 'em down, bully 'em out" model of such right-wing blowhards as Loofah O'Reilly and Pigman Limbaugh. Don't believe me? Take some examples of what he's said, both on his show on HN and his radio hate-fest:

• Illegal immigrants are "trying to conquer our culture", and Iranian prez Mahmoud Ahmadinejad "sounded ... a lot like Michael Moore" in a letter.


• On Iran: "I say we nuke the bastards (...) In fact, it doesn't have to be Iran, it can be everywhere, anyplace that disagrees with me."


• On New School graduation speaker Jean Rohe, who said that the decision to have the new, more Christofascist John McCain speak at the graduation ceremony was done against the interests of the students: "Shut up! Shut up! Shut Up! I can't take her!"


• On Moussaoui: "In 30 years, I think this guy could become the next 'Tookie' Williams," agreeing with a caller of similar non-mind stating that "the Left" would make a "celebrity" out of Moussaoui.


• His famous hatred for the victims of Hurricane Katrina and the families of 9/11 victims: "And that's all we're hearing about, are the people in New Orleans. Those are the only ones we're seeing on television are the scumbags(.)" "[W]hen I see a 9-11 victim family on TV or whatever, I'm just like, 'Oh, shut up!' I'm just so sick of them because they're always complaining."...


• And, of course, like all vacuous right-wing windbags, he has to take a simple-minded, ham-fisted shot at Cindy Sheehan and her personal tragedy and drive to see justice done: "Cindy Sheehan. That's a pretty big prostitute there, you know what I mean? [...] Pretty hard to beat prostituting your son's death. Don't you think?"

And it's not just the fact that he says this disgusting shit that bothers me; it's the fact that CNN's commercials try to tout this jackass as a "normal guy". Yeah, normal guys make it a point to want to nuke whole countries if they don't kiss his lily-white ass. Normal guys call grieving mothers prostitutes. Normal guys hate tragedy victims. If that's what normal guys do, then by God, I'm abnormal.

Second, my hatred of Nancy Grace. This is a minor point, but one I have to get out: this woman is a big red herring. Every night, her show is the source of more Missing/Dead Pretty White Woman stories. She does NOTHING ELSE, far as I've seen. Her only point is to distract people from the real stories, the real problems of this world, by filling them with fear that their Pretty White Women may be next.

At least I don't have to pay too much attention to the TV there. I can always just keep working.
